US report spotlights China's nuclear missile force

The acquisition of new ballistic missile submarines by the People's Liberation Army Navy of China (PLAN) will give the country a “more survivable and flexible” nuclear missile force, according to a report by the US Department of Defense (DoD).

China has launched two Jin-class (Type 094) strategic submarines in the past three years and the first boat is expected to enter service in 2008. Meanwhile, a submarine-launched JL-2 ballistic missile with a reported range of more than 8,000 km was successfully flight-tested in June 2005.

In its report to the US Congress, entitled 'Military Power of the People's Republic of China', the Pentagon says: "China is modernising its longer-range ballistic missile force by adding more survivable systems."
