China ASAT test rekindles weapons debate
By Caitlin Harrington
The US government confirmed on 18 January that China used an anti-satellite (ASAT) rocket to destroy an obsolete weather satellite in a weapons test that has scattered debris in the low earth orbital field and re-ignited the debate on the weaponisation of space.
Australia, Canada and the US have formally expressed their concern about the destruction of the Feng Yun 1C (FY-1C) satellite on 11 January and more countries - including Japan, South Korea and the UK - are expected to follow, a Bush administration official told Jane's on 18 January.
"The US believes China's development and testing of such weapons is inconsistent with the spirit of co-operation that both countries aspire to in the civil space area," National Security Council spokesman Gordon Johndroe said. "We and other countries have expressed our concern regarding this action to the Chinese.”
